Thank you for taking the time to complete The Northern Ireland (NI) Pharmacy Technician and Pharmacy Support Staff Workforce Survey 2023. It is for all individual Pharmacy Technician and Support Staff in NI to complete and will allow a better understanding of the current numbers and skills mix in the pharmacy workforce.

Why your views matter

The results of this survey will help inform the implementation of the Pharmacy Workforce Review 2020, which seeks to deliver a sustainable pharmacy workforce for the future. In addition, the survey will also support the work to establish pharmacy technicians as a regulated healthcare profession in Northern Ireland, as announced by the Minister for Health in June 2022. These actions are recommendations of the Pharmacy Workforce Review 2020 and will be key enablers to enhance the contribution that pharmacy technicians can make to the delivery of healthcare across all settings.

What happens next

It will be used to inform and take forward recommendations made within the  Pharmacy Workforce Review Implementation Plan. We plan to publish the results in Autumn 2023

  • Pharmacy Workforce Review 2020

    In 2018, the first Northern Ireland Pharmacy Workforce Review was commissioned to gain a better understanding of the numbers and skills mix in the pharmacy workforce and to inform planning and future investment in services and education. The Pharmacy Technicians Report was then published in 2020, and will be used to support the implementation of the 2020 Pharmacy Workforce Review’s actions for in Northern Ireland. These actions include a commitment to take forward the regulation of the pharmacy technician profession, in-line with the rest of the United Kingdom. Also to work with education providers to ensure sufficient training places to meet the needs of the health and social care service, to develop the technician workforce in general practice, hospital and community pharmacy sectors and promote career progression in all sectors.

  • Regulation of Pharmacy Technicians in Northern Ireland moves forward

    In June 2022, the Minister for Health announced following public consultation, that work was to begin to establish pharmacy technicians as a regulated healthcare profession in Northern Ireland. This will be a key enabler to enhancing the contribution that pharmacy technicians can make to the delivery of healthcare across all settings. It will allow the regulator to strengthen its role in protecting patients and promoting high standards, thereby enhancing the public’s confidence and trust in pharmacy practice.

  • National Pharmacy Technician Day

    Each year, the pharmacy community takes a day to especially celebrate pharmacy technicians and support staff. Employers and educational providers are encouraged to ensure that the public, patients and other healthcare professions understand the importance of these roles and to show appreciation of the importance of the work technicians do every day.
