A5 Western Transport Corridor Section 1 Route Options Public Engagement May-July 2026

Overview

A5 Western Transport Corridor (A5WTC) Section 1

Route Options Public Engagement Questionnaire

Thank you for taking the time to engage in this new Stage 2 Scheme Assessment (SAR2) for Section 1 of the A5 Western Transport Corridor (A5WTC) between Newbuildings and Sion Mills. This public engagement is being undertaken at an early stage in the scheme development  process and will assist the Department in its development and comparative assessment of route options.

As part of the new SAR2 for A5WTC Section 1 (Newbuildings to Sion Mills), five high-level route options have been identified for comparison (including the 2009 Preferred Route option shown in white on the route options map).

These five options have zone boundary markers representing locations at which it may be preferable to cross over from one route option to another, to optimise benefits, impacts and cost. These are labelled as zones A, B, C and D on the route options map.

About completing the questionnaire

Before answering the following questions about the route options, please review the scheme information provided at A5WTC.com.

These route options all support the following scheme objectives:

  • Improve road safety
  • Improve the roads network in the west of the province and North/South links
  • Reduce journey times and improve journey reliability along the A5WTC
  • Provide increased overtaking opportunities along the A5WTC
  • Develop a scheme proposal in light of safety, economics, environment, accessibility and integration considerations

We now invite you to complete this short questionnaire. Your input will help us progress a new SAR2, leading to our recommendation of a Preferred Route for the A5WTC Section 1.

Please submit your completed questionnaire by 11:59 pm on Tuesday 7 July 2026.

If you have completed a paper copy of the questionnaire, please return it to the A5WTC Section 1 Team at DfI Roads, Western Division, County Hall, Drumragh Avenue, Omagh, BT79 7AF or drop it off with our staff at the public engagement events. Alternatively, you can scan your paper copy and submit it electronically via A5WTC@wsp.com

We want to hear from you (from 11am on 27 May - 11:59pm 7 July)
