Clean Air Strategy Public Consultation 2026

Overview

The draft Clean Air Strategy for Northern Ireland sets out a clear ambition to improve air quality by 2032 through five strategic objectives; strengthening the evidence base; updating legislation with more ambitious particulate limits; raising public awareness and behavioural change; preventing pollution at source; and delivering action collaboratively across government and partners.

This strategy supersedes the Air Quality Strategy for England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland 2007. Prior to the publication of this strategy, the UK wide 2007 strategy provided general protection for air quality within Northern Ireland. A more focused approach is now possible with the introduction of Northern Ireland’s first bespoke strategy.

A comprehensive programme of actions, including upgraded monitoring, annual awareness campaigns, transport planning, tighter fuel and appliance standards, and a just transition away from polluting solid fuels for home heating, will support better health, protect the environment and promote cleaner, more sustainable communities.

Together, these measures will support a healthier population, more resilient natural environments, and cleaner communities. The strategy aims to ensure that by 2032, Northern Ireland has stronger air quality protections, greater public understanding of air pollution, and the foundations for continued long‑term improvement.

The consultation opens on the 1st September 2026 at 10 am and will close on the 27th October 2026 at 5pm.
