Innovation Visit- Nutrient Solutions for High Output Dairy Systems- March 2026
Overview
The College of Agriculture, Food and Rural Enterprise (CAFRE) is inviting applications from farmers interested in attending an Innovation Visit (IV) as part of the new Farming for Sustainability – Innovation Scheme. This visit will be focused on Innovations to partition nutrients from cattle slurry particularly the removal of Phosphorus from high-output dairying systems.
The IV will be to Harper Adams University in Shropshire and Grosvenor Farms in Cheshire, and will run across two days, Wednesday 4 and Thursday 5 March 2026. This is a unique opportunity to learn about forward thinking research on nutrient partitioning solutions for high output dairy systems and the adoption of these innovations on farm.
Harper Adams University will highlight research exploring how dairy farms can manage nutrients through animal nutrition and slurry treatments. This work focuses on developing circular economies within their businesses and reducing purchased fertilisers by optimising the use of the nutrients produced.
At Grosvenor Farms the group will see and hear how sustainability is a key driver in the management of this large-scale dairy business. Detail will be provided on how this innovative approach is being used to limit the nutrient impact on the surrounding environment.
Over the two days farmers will get to see at first-hand how highly productive enterprises can be successfully managed in tandem with achieving environmental sustainability. Part of this is to explore and showcase innovative nutrient solutions and the need to manage steps to handle nutrients efficiently.
Applications are invited from one member or employee of a farm business, who is 18 years old or over on the application closing date. Twenty places are available on this visit; these will be allocated with preference given to those who meet the selection criteria. Applicants must commit to attending pre and post trip training with dates to be arranged.
